God of Death

Garr is the guardian of souls and protects the spirits of men as they travel to other world.
After the goddess Tempress turned against her fellow deities and created the World of Tempress, each of the six remaining gods, often referred to as the prime deities, chose to take up an aspect of life to watch over. Garr chose death.
Garr is opposed to the existence of the undead, and his followers are usually committed to their destruction. The animation of a corpse, or the untimely lingering of a soul, is a perversion of natural order and it is the role of Garr to, not only shepherd the souls of the living to the afterlife, but to ensure their mortal remains return to earth.
Garr is also commonly believed to be the lord of the Reapers. He uses these creatures to help bring souls through The Void, between Tempress and the other world.
Garr is usually worshiped at night for it is said that the moon, when full, is the gateway to the afterlife. For these reasons funerals on Tempress are often held at night and important bodies are preserved until the full moon so that the spirit may best travel onwards.

Worshipers

As with all deities, the worshipers of Garr come in a variety of forms.
The traditional robes of Garr followers are often dark. Black, grey, dark purples and blues are common garb, sometimes including head coverings.
Typically, clerics and paladins of Garr are normally known as shepherds and are experts in matters of death. Often, the clergy attends to funerals, burials and cremations of the recently deceased, ensuring the soul of the departed goes to the correct place. Clerics of Garr are also adept at tending to those left behind, perhaps grieving for the deceased.
Martial and magical practitioners devoted to Garr often quest to find and eradicate undead wherever found.
Though most shepherds will happily use healing, resurrection magic is an extremely contentious subject within the church of Garr - some followers believe that raising the dead actively prevents souls traveling to their rightful destination. Others, believe the lord of dead is all powerful, and decides whether or not to allow a soul to return to the material plane.
Like many religions, Garr has a collection of followers with more extreme beliefs. The Cult of Garr is a well known group of these extremists. These Garr worshipers not only shepherd the dead to their master, but also actively encourage those who they see as "overstaying their welcome" on to the other side. They reject healing magic and find resurrection abhorrent.
For our Into the Wilds D&D games, you can have a character of any class follow the Piety Path - Garr, in order to get the God of Death's favour.

Temples

Unlike most temples, the pews and chairs are not in rows. Instead, they surround a large circular alter which chractersises a Temple of Garr. Notably, there is a circular opening above the stone alter, where the sky is visible. This opening is designed to ensure the moon can be seen when at its fullest. Sometimes, the stone alter is painted with the black and purple concentric circles that represent the god of death.
Some temples have an additional alter for the placement of bodies.

History

Among Garr worshipers there is sometimes spoken a prophecy that Garr will tire of waiting and call all the living souls to their resting place. This day will be proceeded by the purple moon. A lunar eclipse leaving a purple outline around it.
This forms the imagery that make up the Garr Symbol, though it's meaning is lost to many of Garr's followers.
