Age of Avatars

Before the Peacemaker War...

The histories of the land tell us that the Gods occupy the Divine Plane. At the dawn of the known land, the Goddess Tempress betrayed her fellow Gods and took it upon herself to create a world. This world, Tempress, was forged from the immense power of the Genai and is said to be the Godess's experiment. Upon the land Tempress, the Goddess made a range of living creatures all with the gift of free will.
Outraged that Tempress had betrayed her kind and granted such power of mind to another race, the Gods set out to destroy Tempress. A divine war ensued and within the great battle, Tempress was defeated and she fell from the Divine Plane to the land of Tempress, believed to be dead.
With the fallen Goddess supposedly dead and a new land filled with unguided creatures, the God's set about enforcing dominion over the people of Tempress. Each of the six Gods took on a domain that would provide structure to the worlds; Alaie became the Goddess of the elements, Dariss became the God of war, Garr became the God of death, Imogen became the God of love, Peridot became the God of knowledge, and Sardonyx became the God of Luck.
Determined to never allow another God to diverge from their Divine duty, the Gods agreed to seal themselves in the Divine Plane. Together, they created a Divine Gate that could not be crossed by any God individually without consent from all six of the Gods.
The Gods placed incredibly powerful Avatars amongst the people of Tempress to act as rulers of their civilisation and guide them to the correct faith. The Goddess, Tempress, had envisioned a plane where all of her subjects were free to govern their own destiny, but this seemed incredibly dangerous to the six remaining Gods. The Avatars were tasked with ensuring the people understood their place. However, the gift of free will made the people restless and, despite their evident weaknesses, they regularly rose up causing conflict and destruction - even killing many prominent Avatars.
The Gods faced new challenges of their own. They had forged the Avatars from their own will; yet, as time passed many of the Avatars became corrupted by their power and, though they claimed to be devout, turned away from the guidance of their respected deities. The six deities began to understand that their decision to create the Avatars was not dissimilar from Tempress's actions.
Eventually, an Avatar of Dariss decided that the only way peace could be achieved was to destroy the people of Tempress. This Avatar called himself the Peacemaker General and commanded huge armies which obliterated entire nations. The Avatars became divided killing one another mercilessly and sacrificing people of the land without restraint.
Finally, the six Gods were forced to intervene again. Much to their distaste, the Avatars had truly demonstrated the horror of free will. The six Gods agreed to open the Divine Gate once more and withdraw the Avatars back to the Divine Plane. They then sealed the gate once more, and it has not been opened since.
Though some Avatars appeared to escape their calling and still roam Tempress, this signifies the beginning of the Age of Mortals.
